Guardian ad Litem Outreach Project
The students, faculty and staff of Holy Comforter Episcopal School opened their hearts this holiday season. The school sponsored 33 children through the Guardian Ad Litem program in which to provide a Christmas full of gifts. Each class sponsored a child and students, with their families, brought in gender specific clothes, toys and other necessities. The Guardian Ad Litem children ranged in age from a few months old to teenage years.
This has become the annual Christmas outreach program for Holy Comforter, as the school has been associated with Guardian Ad Litem through Child Advocate II since 2002.
On Monday, December 5th, teachers and students gathered the gifts from each classroom and set them out front under the Bell Tower for pick-up. The site was a mound of bags, bikes, games and more, full of goodies for local children. Members of the Holy Comforter student council helped load the toys into the back of the moving truck. Guardian Ad Litem will host an event for the foster families to come pick-up the gifts before Christmas.

Grandpeople's Day: A Musical Trip Around the World!
HCES students took their “grandpeople” on a trip around the world on Tuesday, November 22nd at the annual Grandpeople’s Day. Over 500 grandpeople joined their grandchildren for a morning of performances and time in the classroom.
After a lively music program full of traditional songs from across the globe, grandpeople were invited back to the classrooms to visit. Three separate sessions for different grade levels invited them for time with their students. Grandpeople in the 1st two sessions listened to the wonderful music performed by grades PK-1st and 2nd - 5th grade students. Middle school students invited their grandpeople to a traditional chapel program with a special performance by the Middle School guitar class.
Grandpeople’s Day, a long standing Holy Comforter tradition, is held each year on the Tuesday before the Thanksgiving holidays. A grandperson may be a grandparent, aunt, uncle, friend or any special person. We give special thanks for all of our grandpeople!

20 Years on Fleischmann Road
This week marks the 20th anniversary of the initial groundbreaking ceremony for Holy Comforter Episcopal School's Fleischmann Road campus. The board members, administrators, faculty and staff, parents and alumni who were part of that special day were true visionaries, giving us such a gift in this campus we now call our
school home. It's amazing how our campus has changed and grown in such a short amount of time.
The follow poem, The Bridge Builder by Will Allen Dromgoole, was used repeatedly in 1996 as a call to support the move to Fleischmann Road. As we are in the beginning stages of raising funds to complete their vision of a PK3-8 school, we thought that you might enjoy reading what inspired them.
The Bridge Builder
An old man going a lone highway,
Came at the evening, cold and gray,
To a chasm, vast, and deep and wide,
Through which was flowing a sullen tide.
The old man crossed in the twilight dim;
The sullen stream had no fear for him;
But he turned, when safe on the other side,
And built a bridge to span the tide.
"Old man," said a fellow pilgrim, near,
"You are wasting strength with building here;
Your journey will end with the ending day;
You never again will pass this way;
You've crossed the chasm, deep and wide-
Why build you this bridge at the evening tide?"
The builder lifted his old gray head:
"Good friend, in the path I have come," he said,
"There followeth after me today,
A youth, whose feet must pass this way.
This chasm, that has been naught to me,
To that fair-haired youth may a pitfall be.
He, too, must cross in the twilight dim;
Good friend, I am building this bridge for him."

Beautiful fall arrangements adorned picnic tables and cafe lights lit the grounds with fire pits scattered about to keep everyone warm in the fall air. HCES fathers took turns shucking oysters for all to enjoy as families listened to the sounds of the Frank Jones Band and visited with friends underneath our iconic bell tower. The evening was a relaxed parents' night out with time to enjoy the fellowship and food with our friends and HCES family. Attention: SMART Tuition Account Users
Did you know that you can use your SMART Tuition account to make a tax deductible donation to Holy Comforter Episcopal School? Every year, over 65-70% of our families participate in the school’s Crusader Fund to provide classroom enhancements and professional development for teachers, offer tuition assistance and offset basic school operations. Every dollar counts as it is the collective power of all our donations that make the
Difference for our school.
Would it be easier for your family to make a pledge now and pay monthly through SMART Tuition? For instance, what if your family contributes $100 in May to the Crusader Fund every year? Is the school appreciative of your gift? Absolutely! But what if you could make a $25 or more payment monthly from now through May? You would add 50% to your previous year’s contribution and that makes a HUGE difference!
Contact Holly Wilbourn at
hwilbourn@hces.org to set up your Crusader Fund pledge, today!

The school courtyard was transformed in to a festive fair with bounce houses, facepainting, a rock wall, games, crafts, cotton candy, sno cones, a cake walk and more. Fall Festival Chairs, Stephanie Ellis and Karen Haber and numerous volunteers worked tirelessly to organize and set-up the annual family event. In addition, 5th graders prepared for weeks creating their cardboard arcade games as part of their STEM class. The games were setup in the school gym where kids could come play their arcade creations, earning prizes.

Have you made your pledge to the Crusader Fund?
The Crusader Fund supports classroom enhancement requests from teachers, tuition assistance and bridges the gap between tuition dollars and the actual cost of running our excellent program. We strive to have an active parent participation because your gift signifies your belief in a Holy Comforter education and reinforces the importance of investing in our school for other donors. Some parents find it easier to pledge at a meaningful level at this time of year and make small payments on their pledge through SMART Tuition or with a credit card.

Safeguarding God's Children
The Board of Regents of the Episcopal Diocese requires that anyone who volunteers in any capacity at Holy Comforter Episcopal School or who chaperones a school-sponsored field trip, must be certified to do so. The Diocesan policy requires re-certification every 5 years and does not accept alternate training or documentation. Only the Diocesan course entitled, “Safeguarding God’s Children” will be accepted. Training or certification previously received through another church, state or law enforcement agency, medical facility or licensing agency, etc., no longer satisfies the Episcopal Diocese requirement.
Parents, grandparents and other approved volunteers may register for the online course using the link below. Please allow for at least 48 hours to receive a login and password for the course. If current parents and volunteers need to check their status regarding compliance, they may contact Janet Parrish at 383-1007 or

Attention all Middle Schoolers: Wyldlife
Wyldlife is the middle school ministry of YoungLife. Wyldlife aims to introduce students to Jesus and help them to grow in their faith. At Holy Comforter, Wyldlife "club" meets after school from 3:05 to 4:25 in the student center on Wednesdays, with pick-up at the bell tower. Every middle school student is welcome! Wyld is the key word! At Wyldlife club, we love to play ridiculous games that sometimes revolve completely around donuts or some other seemingly random theme in order to point people to Christ in a fun and engaging way. Every week we’ll have snacks, play group games, hold a raffle, and close with a message about Jesus. The first Wyldlife Club for this year is Wednesday, September 21st! Questions? Contact Gina Resavage at 728-2678.

Counselor's Corner: Responsibility
Contributed by Jenna Long, Guidance Counselor
I am certain it is a common sentiment at the moment, but lately I
continuously find myself thinking: “Can the end of the school year be here
already?” Another year has flown by, but what a joy and privilege it is to be
a part of such a wonderful school. The Character Trait for the month of
May is Responsibility. Through our Character Education Program, we have
spent the year studying a variety of valuable concepts designed to help
reinforce the values and morals we all strive to teach our children at home
in our daily lives. Interestingly, this month’s trait is a bit unique. Unlike the
others, responsibility is often used in conversation with a negative
connotation. That is – “You’re going to be held responsible for this!” or
“This was your responsibility!” This is a cultural sign of how heavy this
character trait can sometimes be. As a result, we sometimes think of our
responsibilities as burdens. But as we study this trait with our children we
are focused on the opposite – how important and positive responsibility can be.

Holy Comforter Episcopal Church Dove Lands Home on Fleischmann Road
On Friday, March 25, the dove, affixed to the original church located on Miccosukee Road, was delivered to campus. The dove was gifted to the Church years ago and was a meaningful symbol of the Holy Spirit. When the Church moved to the new building on Fleischmann Road, the dove remained with hope of someday making its way home. Now that the old building will be removed making room for the new TMH Surgical Center, several members of the community pitched in to remove the 14,000lb. symbol and transport it to Fleischmann Road, just in time for Easter.
A memorial garden will be built around the dove.

8th Grade Science Students Welcome Dr. Harrison Prosper
On Friday, March 4th, Dr. Harrison Prosper stopped by to speak with 8th Grade Science students about space, gravity, and history. During the visit, he answered student's questions about various topics and visited our science classrooms. Ms. Stevenson's students were putting some final touches on their STEM Fair projects and Ms. Jung's were doing a station lab about rocks. After observing and engaging students, Dr. Prosper said, "This is why I'm so optimistic about education." He was thrilled to see students engaged and learning through discovery, trial, error, and facilitation. It's not every day that a university professor of physics, CERN Collaboration Team member, and scientist that helped discover a subatomic particle, the muon, compliments your students and program. He has already requested to come back next year and also invited a group of students to go star gazing in the fall with his college class. Special thank you to teacher, Lance Davis for welcoming guest speakers and untraditional learning experiences into our classrooms.

Counselor’s Corner: Courage
Contributed by Preschool Guidance Counselor, Jenna Long
The character trait for the month of February is courage. Courage can mean a lot of things. It looks different depending on your perspective. What it means to be courageous to our precious preschoolers is different from what it looks like in a seasoned grandparent, a patient middle school teacher, or a young couple embarking on parenthood. But whether you’re four or ninety-four, courage has a common thread that touches each of us no matter our circumstance. Courage means to face difficulty, whatever its form, without or more often, in spite of your fear. In our daily lives, courage often means doing what is right or what is necessary despite our unease.

Holy Comforter Episcopal School Students Go On An International Journey through Switzerland’s CERN Laboratory
Holy Comforter Episcopal School’s middle school students experienced a special opportunity on Friday, January 29th as they went on a virtual tour of the CERN Laboratory near Geneva, Switzerland. CERN, otherwise known as the European Council for Nuclear Research was founded in 1954 and sits near the France/Switzerland border. The laboratory is the largest physics lab in the world and was established as a world-class fundamental physics research organization in Europe. Though CERN was created to investigate and understand the inside of an atom, the organization has vastly expanded as our knowledge of matter has broadened. Physicists and engineers at CERN are now probing the fundamental structure of the universe as they use the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments to study the basic constituents of matter – the fundamental particles.
Last year, 8th Grade students connected with physicists at the CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid) portion of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) to learn about the experiments that were underway as scientist learn more about the particles that make up our universe. This year, students connected with another part of the LHC, ATLAS (A Toroidal LHC ApparatuS), and learned about the what type of experiments they conduct.

TARGET Students Brighten the Day at Elder Care
Throughout January, Mrs. Wylie’s 8th grade TARGET class worked together to plan a visit to the Elder Day Stay Program, a drop off program for seniors needing different levels of care. On January 27, our students visited the program and facilitated a variety of activities, including board games, cards, puzzles, checkers, bingo, and beanbag tosses. The students spent the morning interacting with approximately 30 seniors of varied abilities and even left them with a surprise snack of fresh fruit. It was apparent that the visit meant a great deal not only to the elders, but to our students, as well. Often times, the elderly can be a forgotten demographic, and it was a wonderful experience for our students to celebrate them in such a special way.
