    Guardian Ad Litem Program

The students, faculty and staff of Holy Comforter Episcopal School opened their hearts this holiday season. The school sponsored 33 children through the Guardian Ad Litem program in which to provide a Christmas full of gifts. Each class sponsored a child and students, with their families, brought in gender specific clothes, toys and other necessities. The Guardian Ad Litem children ranged in age from a few months old to teenage years.

This has become the annual Christmas outreach program for Holy Comforter, as the school has been associated with Guardian Ad Litem through Child Advocate II since 2002.

On Thursday, December 7th, teachers and students gathered the gifts from each classroom and set them out front under the Bell Tower for pick-up. The site was a mound of bags, bikes, games and more, full of goodies for local children. Members of the Holy Comforter student council helped load the toys into the back of the moving truck. Despite the rainy morning, our hearts were full. Guardian Ad Litem will host an event for the foster families to come pick-up the gifts before Christmas.

  • 'Tis the Season

As Christmas rapidly approaches, we want to stop and take a moment to say "thank you." By being a part of our HCES family, you give us the opportunity to fulfill our passion; teaching your children each day.

During this season, we hope you will join us and remember Holy Comforter in your charitable giving. This past week, we have kicked of the Christmas season with several events here at HCES. On Wednesday, November 29th, we held the annual Blessing of the Christmas Tree. They played and sang Christmas favorites such as Away in a MangerThe First Noel, O Come, O Come EmmanuelAuld Lang Syne, and Dance from The Nutcracker. Today, the Parent Association held the annual Cookie Exchange for our Faculty and Staff. It is a yearly favorite and we are so grateful to all of the parents for making such special treats for our staff! A special thank you to Megan Fuhrmeister, this year's chair for organizing the event.

  • Grandpeople's Day

HCES students took their "grandpeople" on a musical trip through the movies on Tuesday, November 21st at the annual Grandpeople's Day. Over 500 grandpeople joined their grandchildren for a morning of performances and time in the classroom.

After a lively music program full of movie classics, grandpeople were invited back to the classroom to visit and enjoy refreshments. Three separate sessions for different grade levels invited them for time with their students. Grandparents in the 1st and 2nd sessions listened to the wonderful music performed by grades PK-1st and 2nd - 5th grade students with cameos from a few of our Middle School Choir students. Middle school students invited their grandpeople to a traditional chapel program with performances from guitar students and the Middle School Choir.

Grandpeople's Day a long standing Holy Comforter tradition, is held each year on the Tuesday before the Thanksgiving holidays. A grandperson may be a grandparent, aunt, uncle, friend or any special person. This Thanksgiving, we gave special thanks for all of our grandpeople!

  • PB&J Day

On Wednesday, November 8th Middle School Student Council hosted the 1st PB&J Day, meaning "Putting others Before yourself for Jesus." As part of the November outreach, collecting cans for the local "Feed a Family" project, students wanted to give the service project deeper meaning. So many in our community go without and have nothing more than a Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwich to eat each day. With that in mind, student council members challenged the Middle School students to leave their lunch at home and instead bring cans to donate to the "Feed a Family" service project. In addition, a PB&J sandwich was provided for each student's lunch so that they could experience what so many in our community experience each day. Thank you to the many parent volunteers who gathered to make over 150 PB&J sandwiches for this project. Students gathered in the outdoor chapel for fellowship as they ate together. The project was a great success and we look forward to sharing the results from the "Feed a Family" outreach, as well. Great job students, together, we can make a difference!

  • Annual Report 2016-2017

As stewards of the resources we have been given, Holy Comforter Episcopal School has published the 2016-2017 Annual Report online. Please click here to view this year’s Annual Report. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact the Advancement Office at 850-383-1007 or hwilbourn@holy-comforter.org

Publishing an annual report reminds us of how fortunate we are to have individuals and families who care so deeply about Holy Comforter. The hundreds of names on the pages of the report represent far more than a donation. All of the people listed have a specific reason – and perhaps even a personal story – that has motivated them to support the school financially. We continue to grow stronger every year, because of the incredible support, beyond tuition dollars, we receive from our parents, grandparents, alumni parents, alumni, faculty and staff and HCES friends. We are grateful and thank you for your support at any level - you make the difference in the education of our children.
  • LAST DAY to Take the HCES Survey

Today is the last day to participate in our school-wide survey. If you haven’t taken a few moments to complete the survey, please do so! As part of our accreditation process, it is incredibly important that we are able to provide critical feedback from members of our school community including teachers, students, and parents - we need to hear from you! If you have not received an email asking you to participate (an email directly from SAIS surveys@sais.org with a linko the survey) please contact us directly at vculpepper@hces.org by 7:00pm and we will make sure you have a chance to participate.

The survey will take approximately 8 minutes and we would appreciate if at least one parent from every family would complete this survey.

We greatly appreciate your time and participation in this incredibly important endeavor as we grow to become the best school community for our children.

  • Fall Festival 2017

This past Friday we welcomed over 800 families and friends to our campus for our annual FallFestival and Book Fair. It was an evening filled with fun and fellowship making it, yet again, one of the most treasured events of the school year.

As you can imagine, many months of planning and hard work go into organizing this special event. HCES Parent, Lisa Barton was our fearless, flexible leader who chaired this event flawlessly. Thank you, Lisa, for leading the charge! We are grateful for your hard work, time and energy organizing Fall Festival. In addition, our annual Fall Book Fair was in full swing last week. Book Fair chairs, Kristen Krizner and Stephanie McKee, worked tirelessly all week serving our families, teachers, and students during another fantastic Book Fair. They were also gracious in rearranging their schedules to stay open late during the Fall Festival - thank you!

Due to unforeseen circumstances (thank you, Hurricane Irma), we had to adjust our festivalnot once but twice just days before the event. Thus, we found ourselves switching gears and pulling out all the stops. Desperate for volunteers, we sent an "all-call" email seeking any and all the help we could get. Our parents, faculty and staff members immediately answered that call and began to sign up to volunteer. Thank you for rallying around us and helping us make this event a success for our children. We were overcome with your generosity and willingness to help. We were even blessed with a double rainbow at the start of the event.

We hope you enjoyed the family-favorite Fall Festival and Book Fair. Below, you can view images from the event.

  • Middle School CNN (Crusader News Network)

Middle School students are sharing news across our campus. Crusader News Network, branded as CNN, is a Middle School elective created for our young writers that teaches the basics of journalism. With it being increasingly more difficult to tell fact from fiction in mainstream media, students are taught importance of writing pieces that reflect accurate and interesting, unbiased information to their audience. In the class, students are allowed to explore their own interests and discuss topics that they find interesting.  The class meets every other school day for one hour and during this time, the students strive to get at least one story completed each class. Last year, the CNN elective shared their stories on paper and posted them in the hallways. This year, the class has setup a news site to share their information with our entire school community. We invite you to take a look and check back for stories each week regarding activities and events on campus.  Click here to visit CNN's site.

Soon, each student will create their own video bio, which will link from their photo on the homepage of the website. Stay tuned!

(This is a holiday for Leon County Schools) We know this will provide an excellent opportunity for their friends to see for themselves what school at HCES is like.

  • Safeguarding God's Children

The Board of Regents of the Episcopal Diocese requires that anyone who volunteers in any capacity at Holy Comforter Episcopal School or who chaperones a school-sponsored field trip, must be certified to do so. The Diocesan policy requires re-certification every 5 years and does not accept alternate training or documentation.  Only the Diocesan course entitled, “Safeguarding God’s Children” will be accepted.  Training or certification previously received through another church, state or law enforcement agency, medical facility or licensing agency, etc., no longer satisfies the Episcopal Diocese requirement.

Parents, grandparents and other approved volunteers may register for the online course using the link below.  Please allow for at least 48 hours to receive a login and password for the course.  If current parents and volunteers need to check their status regarding compliance, they may contact Janet Parrish at 383-1007 or jparrish@hces.org.

A big “thank you” to our Parent Association President Lisa Umana, President-elect Heather Brown and Courtney Whitis for organizing such fun-filled back to school events.

  • Back to School Forms

If you have not already done so, there are three different forms you need to update for each child you have enrolled at HCES. You should have already received email notices about the Eucharist Permission Form and the Consent for Medical Treatment Form. There’s one more that’s very important – Emergency Contacts. New families will need to complete the entire emergency contact form. Returning families will need to log into their student's profile and review the emergency contact. See below for instructions.

Please log into the school’s website and select your child.  Under your child, find the Emergency Contacts and review the names and contact information for each person who should be called in case of emergency – if you are not available.  These names also include persons who are permitted to pick up or check your child out of school.

If you need a refresher – look on the Resources page for the Video Tutorial button, and select the video on Emergency Contacts. You can also update this information during the school year if circumstances require.

If you have trouble logging into the website, please contact our Registrar, Cheryl Derstine at cderstine@hces.org.
  • Crusader Connect

We believe it is important to support and encourage each other as a school family. Therefore, Holy Comforter Episcopal School has established “Crusader Connect,” a business networking organization for current parents, grandparents, alumni and alumni parents who provide goods and services in our community.

One of the features of the “Crusader Connect” program is a free, online Business Directory. The Business Directory offers the School community a unique collection of professional resources delivered by people to whom you can turn to and trust. Individuals and families have the opportunity to patronize businesses, which have ties to HCES. The Business Directory is open to anyone visiting the website and is not password protected. When patronizing a business, let them know you're connected to Holy Comforter Episcopal School!

Do you have a business or service that you would like to list in the Crusader Connect Business Directory? It is easy to do. Simply go to https://www.hces.org/page/Support/Business-Directory and fill out your information. Once it’s approved, you will be listed in the directory for the school year. Are you looking for a new service provider? Make the Crusader Connect online directory your first stop in your search!
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact Holly Wilbourn at hwilbourn@hces.org or 383-1007.
  • Immunizations and Illnesses

Each student must have complete health and immunization records on file prior to attending classes.

Immunizations: Must be documented on the Florida Certificate of Immunization. This form is available from your physician or may be downloaded from the Florida Shots website (www.flshots.com) using your child’s Florida Shots ID number. This ID number is available from your physician’s office.

The following are the immunization requirements for the 2018-2019 school year:
    • Students entering K-7th grade are now required to have 2 doses of Varicella (chickenpox) vaccine or proof of the disease in addition to the other required immunizations.
    • PK3 and PK4 (Hib required for 3 and 4 year olds; 4 DTP; 1 MMR; 3 OPV, Heptatitis B)
    • Students entering 7th grade are required to have a Tdap (Tetanus, Diptheria, Pertussis) booster vaccine.
Please contact School Nurse, Taska Zorn with any questions by email at nurse@hces.org.

Illness: Holy Comforter School encourages a healthful environment for all of our students and employees. Please do not send your child to school if they are sick. As part of this effort, students are no longer awarded perfect attendance certificates at the end of the school year.
    • Parents should notify the school immediately if their child has a communicable disease.
    • Please remember that parents are to keep sick students who are contagious (strep throat, impetigo, conjunctivitis, etc) at home until they have been on antibiotics for 24 hours and/or cleared by their physician to return to school.
    • Students who have been absent from school with an illness or fever (above 100º) cannot attend school or any school function (musical, field trip, athletic event/clinic, etc.) until fever and medicine free for 24 hours.
    Prescription and Over-the-Counter Medication
The following policies govern the use, possession, and distribution of prescription and over-the-counter medications. At no time are students allowed to self medicate or possess medications on school property or on school activities with the exception of medically necessary inhalers, which must be registered with the school nurse.
    • Before any medication, including cough drops, shall be administered by school personnel, the parent or legal guardian for the student shall file a Medication Permission Form and give it, along with the medication, to the School Nurse. Forms are available in the school offices, clinic, and on-line.
    • All medication for the student shall come in the original container and shall be labeled (including student’s name). Pharmacists will provide an extra, labeled container for prescription medication.
    • Medication will be dispensed by the school nurse or other school personnel under the supervision of the school nurse if it must be given during the school day.

There are countless opportunities to volunteer, and we welcome, and greatly need, your participation! Please visit our online sign-up sheets at 2018-2019 HCES PA Volunteers.
  • Parent Business and Grandparent Information Form

Parents: If you haven't logged into www.hces.org since August 1st, please do so! There are important back to school forms that need to be filled out including medical, eucharist preference and grandparent contact information forms. Both Mom and Dad need to log in to fill out their individual work information, as well.
  • Solar Eclipse Important Information

We want to relay important information regarding the "The Great American Solar Eclipse" that will be taking place on Monday, August 21st. We are very excited to make this a learning opportunity for our students, however, we will also be taking the necessary precautions to keep our children safe and have made the following changes to our pick-up schedule.
    • If you wish to pick up your child early on August 21st, you may do so as early as 12:00 pm and the absence will be excused.
    • We will delay the release of Lower School students to 3:30 pm and Middle School students to 3:45 pm.
    • Middle School student athletes and Omega students will remain indoors until the completion of the eclipse. All sports teams will practice until 5:00 pm (Volleyball, Golf and Cross Country).
    • If you choose to pick up your child before the delayed pick up times, please park in a designated parking space and sign your child out in the office.
To take advantage of this unique learning opportunity, we have purchased ISO Certified Safe SolarEclipse Glasses, through The Crusader Fund, for all students in grades PK3 - 8th. All students in those grades will have the opportunity to view the eclipse and we will be live streaming this historic event in classrooms. Teachers and administrators will be closely monitoring the students and stressing the importance of keeping the glasses on at all times. We encourage you to also speak with your children about the appropriate safety precautions. For more information about the Total Solar Eclipse you can visit NASA's website at https://eclipse2017.nasa.gov/.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please let us know. If you would prefer your child not participate in viewing the eclipse with their class, please contact your child’s teacher (Lower School homeroom teacher or Middle School TARGET teacher).
  • Student Pick-up Procedures and Dismissal Times

Please take a minute to review the Pick-Up Procedures and Dismissal Times as outlined below.

To view the Pick-up Maps with Lane Assignments by Grade Level CLICK HERE. For full drop-off and pick-up instructions CLICK HERE
    • Please remember to display your family I.D. tag at dismissal so that it may be read easily by adults on duty in the pick-up lines.  If you do not have an I.D. tag, please write your family I.D. number on a piece of paper and hold it up in the window for the staff to see.

    • Please do not park in any pick-up lanes and vacate your car.  If you need to leave your vehicle, please park in the parking lot and walk-in. Stay in your designated lane and continue to pull forward until your student is safely in the car.

    • Pick-up for Grades 2-5 will be in the front of the school in Lanes 1 and 2. Please pull all the way forward to the end of the colonnade/sidewalk closest to the church.

    • Pick-up for Grades PK3-1st will be at cul-de-sac at the rear of the school. Parents should pull around the circular drive to the awning and staff will load your student into your car. Please remain in your car and do not walk across the circular drive.

    • Middle school families should utilize Lanes 3 & 4 for pick-up and are strongly discouraged from arriving on campus too early. To help traffic flow smoothly we ask that you please not “wait” in the lower school lanes (Lanes 1 & 2) to pick up your middle school student(s). Please arrive as late as possible (3:05-3:10 pm) in order to allow the lower school traffic to subside. When pick up for lower school has been completed, Lanes 1 & 2 will open for middle school and traffic will be directed by Mr. White.
    • Siblings with different pick-up times:
If you have students in PK3 - 1st with pick-up in back at the cul-de-sac on the side driveway, we suggest you pick up the younger child first and then pull to the front of the school to pick up your student(s) in 2nd – 8th grade. Older students who have siblings in grades 2-5 should meet their youngest sibling at the designated location to accommodate one pick up.

    • Students not picked up by the scheduled pick-up time (PK3-5th – 3:05) or (6th-8th – 3:15) will be sent to the Omega Program and will be charged the occasional use rate of $25 per day, per family.

Middle School Athletics - A Message from the Athletic Director

As we approach the start of a new year, I encourage all Middle School students to start thinking about joining our Athletic Program. With many teams and activities to choose from, we want to offer as many possibilities for our students to be involved.

In order to participate in athletics, students are required to have the following three forms turned in to the Middle School or Front office, or can be scanned and emailed to me, prior to the first practice: EL2 Physical, EL3 Consent, and Who We Play For Heart Screening Consent*. Forms may be downloaded from the Holy Comforter website under Parent Downloads.

Students are allowed to participate in one sport per season. At the end of last year, we had preliminary sign ups for each season, to gauge the interest level in each sport. These sign ups will continue for Fall Sports at the beginning of the school year, and Winter and Spring sign ups begin two-three weeks prior to the start of that season.

The offerings within the Athletic Program are:

Fall: Boys & Girls Cross Country, Co-ed Golf, Volleyball

    8th Grade Graduation

On Thursday, May 25, the Holy Comforter Episcopal School 8th grade class graduated in a ceremony held in the school's Student Center. The service, led by Head of School Peter Klekamp, welcomed hundreds of parents, families and friends. A traditional chapel service was followed by the presentation of awards and diplomas. Two 8th grade students, Megan Steele and Annika Strayer addressed the audience, reflecting on their years spent at HCES. Students, families and friends then took a trip down memory lane as they previewed the much-anticipated annual “8th Grade Slideshow” which takes a look back over the students’ career at HCES. After the ceremony, graduates and their families gathered in the courtyard for a celebratory reception organized by parents Elizabeth Diehl and Ali Kelly.

Prior to graduation, the eighth graders wrapped up their final months at Holy Comforter with a myriad of activities and exciting moments. First, a “surprise” graduation breakfast was sponsored by the Advancement Office, and the 8th graders received a class t-shirt and were taught what it means to be an alumnus of Holy Comforter. The students and their families attended a Baccalaureate Ceremony on Monday, May 15th. At the end of the service, the Holy Comforter bell was rung once for each student, a yearly tradition that has become especially meaningful to the students and their families. On May 22nd, after an awards’ ceremony, the 8th grade students visited Camp Weed in Live Oak for a two-day retreat. The retreat provided a time of reflection and closure for the students as they move into high school. They participated in devotions and team-building activities, as well as a variety of indoor and outdoor activities, including swimming, singing praise music, and engaging in fun relay races. Students enjoyed spending time together during their last days at Holy Comforter. Congratulations to the Class of 2017, our newest Holy Comforter alumni!

We are pleased to announce the 2017-2018 Parent Association Officers, please see below. If you see them, please thank and congratulate them!

    PA President - Lisa Umana
PA President Elect - Heather Brown
Vice President of Middle School - Corinna Strayer
Vice President of Volunteers & Homeroom Parents - Courtney Whitis
  • Check it off your list!

As our school year is coming to a close, the Advancement Office is making their last requests for Crusader Fund donations. We have made significant progress in our parent participation percentage but still need 67 families to participate to reach our 70% participation goal prior to June 30!

Why is it important? Why should YOU participate?
    1. Your child(ren) directly benefit from your generosity
    2. It funds teacher wish lists - what a great way to say thank you for an awesome school year!
    3. It offsets basic school operations, therefore keeps tuition from dramatic increases every year
    4. Next year is a re-accreditation year for Holy Comforter and the accreditation team expects to see a healthy parent participation in it's annual fund
    5. It's TAX DEDUCTIBLE and it signifies your support for your school!!!

Will you be the difference maker? Will you participate?

Check it off your list...click here and give today! If you have any questions, please contact Meghan Wilson. She is happy to chat!
  • Congrats to our Senior Alumni Class of 2017

Holy Comforter's 8th grade class of 2013 will soon graduate from 5 different local high schools (Leon, Lincoln, Chiles, Maclay, and JPII) and Florida Virtual School. Although information is still coming to us about scholarships and awards that they have been awarded, we are so proud of their accomplishments that we could not wait to share it with you.

    Individual Achievements of Note:
Nick Fontela (Maclay) will graduate as the salutatorian of his class and plans to attend Southern Methodist University this fall as a Nancy Ann and Ray L. Hunt Leadership Scholars Program award winner. The Hunt Leadership Scholars Award is for full SMU tuition and fees. The award also underwrites tuition and transportation to one of SMU’s study abroad programs. Nick is also an Eagle Scout and National Merit Hispanic Scholar. Congratulations to Nick!

Angeline Tritschler (Maclay), an honors graduate, is headed to the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York. Candidates for admission must both apply directly to the academy and receive a nomination, usually from a member of Congress. Students are officers-in-training and are referred to as "cadets" or collectively as the "United States Corps of Cadets" (USCC). Tuition for cadets is fully funded by the Army in exchange for an active duty service obligation upon graduation. Best of luck to Angeline!

We have at least 5 graduates who plan to continue their athletic pursuits in college. Jack Driggers (Leon) will be kicking field goals for the Duke Blue Devils football team. Molly McCann (Maclay) will be running cross country for University of North Carolina –PembrookeEmma Travis (JPII) and Julia Travis (JPII) will also be running cross country for Meredith College and Berry College, respectively. Aaron Amidon (Chiles) will be playing soccer at his dad’s alma mater Wabash College in Indiana.

    Best and Brightest:
Rachel Rumana (Maclay) won the Best & Brightest Award in the Career/Technical category. Inspired by her friend and fellow HCES classmate Molly McCann who had a seizure at her house, Rachel started her own nonprofit organization, Strides for Seizures. The organization raises money for educational materials for newly diagnosed epilepsy patients. Rachel will graduate with honors and plans to attend the University of VirginiaLeta Ashebo (Leon) won the Best & Brightest Award in the English and Language Arts category. Last summer, Leta traveled to her mother’s native country, Ethiopia, where she witnessed a lack of educational materials. Upon returning to Tallahassee, she organized a book drive that resulted in sending over 2,000 books back to Africa. Leta will graduate summa cum laude and plans to attend Johns Hopkins University on a full academic scholarship. Other graduates who were also nominated for Best and Brightest Awards are: Molly McCann (Maclay) finalist for Athletics, Parker Wilson (Maclay) finalist for Business, Grace Crapps (Maclay) finalist for Drama/Performing Arts, Joseph McCann (Maclay) honorable mention for Foreign Language, Savannah France (Leon) finalist for Foreign Language, Nick Fontela (Maclay) finalist for Leadership, and Hannah Bryson (Leon) finalist for Mathematics.

    Statistics by School:
    • Leon High School has 24 of our graduates: 5 are graduating summa cum laude, 1 magna cum laude; 2 cum laude; 6 with honors and 5 with distinction.
    • Lincoln High School has 1 of our graduates.
    • Chiles High School has 6 of our graduates: 2 will graduate cum laude and 1 is a commended scholar.
    • Maclay School has 12 of our graduates; 8 of which will be graduating with honors.
    • JPII has 3 of our graduates; 2 will graduate cum laude.
The list of college acceptances is long, but we know that the matriculation list includes, but is not limited to: Auburn University, Berry College, Duke University, Flager College, Florida State University, Furman University, Georgia Institute of Technology, Johns Hopkins University, Meredith College, Savannah College of Art and Design, Southern Methodist University, Spring Hill College, St. Leo University, Stetson University, Tallahassee Community College, United States Military Academy, University of Alabama, University of Central Florida, University of Florida, University of Georgia, University of Mississippi, University of North Carolina – Pembrooke, University of North Florida, University of Virginia and Wabash College.

One senior mom wrote, “Our family has placed great value in the education and relationships our son fostered during his time at Holy Comforter. He remains close with his HCES friends. He views his time at Holy Comforter as a tremendous privilege that provided an excellent environment and quality education. As this chapter closes, we look forward to an exciting future for him, and will be forever grateful for the seeds planted at Holy Comforter!”

Congratulations to the HCES Class of 2013! We know that their formative years at Holy Comforter set them apart from their peers and inspired them to Be the Difference during their high school career.

  • Opening Night Presents Dreamwork's Shrek, Jr.

On Friday, our Middle School "Opening Night" Class presented Dreamwork's Shrek Jr. during a daytime showing for local preschools and our school community as well as a nightime showing for HCES families and friends.

Twenty-five middle school students worked tirelessly to create this production as part of the Opening Night class. As the tale goes...Once upon a time, in a far away swamp, there lived an ogre named Shrek whose precious solitude is suddenly shattered by an invasion of fairy tale creatures! They were all banished from their kingdom by the evil and scheming Lord Farquaad. Determined to save their homes – not to mention his own – Shrek cuts a deal with Farquaad and sets out to rescue Princess Fiona who is set to marry the Lord. Thus the adventure began with Shrek and his sidekick Donkey!

Since August, the Opening Night students have worked tirelessly on this beloved tale. Every part of this performance was touched by the student’s creativity and passion, from the sets to the props to the costume design to the choreography and even the playbill. They have had a hand in every aspect of this performance. Focusing on communication, collaboration and problem solving, students were able to take 21st Century Skills and use them creatively in the performing arts to bring to life the final production.

The middle school Opening Night class is a year long elective open to 6th - 8th grade students. This class introduces students to major components of theatre production from script to stage including casting, lighting, theatre technology, directing, marketing, set design, and a wide range of acting techniques. Not only did the students enjoy the art of acting, but they experienced a hands-on class that exposed them to many aspects of theatre.

  • HCES Celebrates Alumni - 8th Graders and High School Seniors!

Holy Comforter celebrated and honored our alumni this past week!

On Wednesday morning, 8thgraders were "surprised" with a special graduation snack. The event officially welcomes the 8th graders as our newest members of the alumni association and explains the many benefits and privileges of being an alumnus of Holy Comforter. Students received their class shirt and enjoyed donuts together. It's hard to believe they will be graduating in just a few short weeks, but we are so proud of each and every one of them and can't wait to see them exceed as they begin their next adventure into high school!

On Monday evening, we welcomed high school seniors to campus for a very special reunion with their classmates. The HCES 8th grade class of 2013 was greeted by former teachers and enjoyed a traditional chapel service in the church. 70% of the senior class returned. Following chapel and a little Q & A, alumni seniors and their parents enjoyed a reception where they reminisced watching their 8th grade slideshow from 4 years ago. Families and students filled the evening with memories, reflecting on their years spent as part of the Holy Comforter family. Before leaving, the alumni played basketball in the gym, took photos in the courtyard and rang Penny the Bell - aways a favorite! The returning students are truly a testament to the Holy Comforter family as they have already achieved such wonderful accomplishments during their high school careers. We wish them all the best and will always welcome them back with open arms. Congratulations class of 2017!

This is an online test that will be conducted throughout the morning hours so it is critical that the students are on time to class each morning (8:05).

This is not a test for which students can prepare. However, in order to familiarize them with the format, the students will be working through some demonstration activities in their classrooms prior to testing week. These activities will allow them to practice navigating through the test and teach them how to properly use test features (marking questions, reviewing answers, and reviewing test sessions).

Teachers will emphasize sound testing strategies with the students. The best way to prepare for a successful testing experience is to get a good night’s sleep, eat a healthy breakfast, and relax. Snacks will be provided each day of testing.

Please feel free to contact Beth McCann, Lower School Counselor, if you have any questions.

  • The Transition to High School and Beyond: Q & A Recap

Last week, Peter Klekamp and Middle School Guidance Counselor Lisa Butera hosted a Q & A for 4th - 8th grade families regarding the transition to high school. The presentation, "Making the Leap: The Transition to High School and Beyond" offered facts on school choice, typical high school tracks, and other high school related information for parents curious about the next step after HCES. It was a great time for questions and discussion among those in the room. The transition to high school can seem like a daunting conversation to have, but Lisa Butera, as well as, Middle School Head, Amy Vernon, walk with each family, each step of the way ensuring a smooth process in finding a high school fit for each child.

As an additional resource, we wanted to share the video below that featured Nell Stranburg, independent college consultant and owner of Your College Advisor, LLC., Ms. Stranburg presented “The College Admission Game” - Hint: The prepwork begins before your student enters high school during one of our Brown Bag Lunches in late 2015. • HCES Welcomes State Leaders to Spring Lecture

Holy Comforter Episcopal School hosted the Spring Lecture Series on Tuesday, February 21st. Members of the community and a bipartisan collection of elected officials and leaders gathered to hear A Special Legislative Preview of the upcoming 2017 Legislative Session from special guest speakers, President of the Florida Senate Joe Negron, and Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives Richard Corcoran as well as local representatives, Senator Bill Montford and Representative Loranne Ausley. Holy Comforter parent Paul Mitchell moderated the lecture.

The speakers came together to discuss several topics including their legislative agenda focusing on issues such as the environment and education. The civics lesson ended with questions from 8th grade students and the audience.

This was a unique opportunity for Holy Comforter to showcase the school and what it means to be part of the Holy Comforter community to a group of individuals that will help set the course for education over the next several years. Hearing from these legislative leaders at such a critical time in the legislative process is unique.

Holy Comforter’s Lecture Series aims to provide a community forum where individuals will gather to hear engaging and enlightening conversation. Speakers will present annual lectures on meaningful topics such as science and technology, the arts, education and civic leadership. All lectures are open to the public and free to attend.

Our lower and middle school first place winners will represent HCES at the county contest at FAMU on January 28th.

After the speeches were written, the students practiced and timed their speeches in preparation for the classroom contests. In December, each class held a classroom contest and had a panel of judges select winners who then attended the school contest.

In Middle School, the speech is open to 6th graders who volunteer to participate, ultimately presenting their speeches in front of the entire middle school student body and volunteer judges.

    Congratulations to all!
