Holy Comforter Celebrates 60 Years

On the morning of Friday, November 13th, the Holy Comforter community gathered at an outdoor traditional chapel service for a meaningful culmination of a week of events celebrating the school's 60 year history.
Over 700 people filled the school's courtyard for the celebratory service which welcomed Bishop Samuel J. Howard of the Episcopal Diocese of Florida, former heads of school, teachers, students, alumni, parents and more. Currents students and teachers wore 60th anniversary shirts and listened as members of the Holy Comforter community shared their reflections from the past 60 years. Special guests included Dr. Barbara Hodges, (Head of School 1993-2010), Jane Mooney (Headmistress 1983-1993), Ellen Lloyd, 34 year veteran teacher, siblings Molly (alumni), Joseph (alumni) and Sean Patrick McCann (current student) (acolytes), Elizabeth Kontos Hightower (alumni, current parent and daughter of the former Holy Comforter Church Rector George Kontos), Pam Marsh (parent, alumni and daughter of former teacher Anne Cothran, founding member of Holy Comforter Episcopal Church and former teacher Ms. Harriet McCarter and many, many more. The Right Rev. Bishop Howard led the service which welcomed several readings and contributions by members of the HCES family. Each reflection offered a special and different point of view - from that of teachers to leaders to alumni, students and more. The service closed with the beloved HCES hymn, The Lord Has a Will.

After the service, students, teachers and special guests enjoyed a community lunch in the courtyard complete with birthday cake and cupcakes for all. Guests enjoyed tours of the grounds and visits with old friends.

Earlier that week, students celebrated the 60th anniversary with several activities including a 50's themed pep rally with a cameo appearance by Elvis himself; 60th day of school classrooms events; a decade day and more.

On Friday evening, current and alumni parents, alumni and former teachers returned for a traditional Low Country Boil and Blues under moonlit skies in the courtyard. Beautiful fall arrangements adorned picnic tables and cafe lights lit the grounds with fire pits scattered about to keep everyone warm in the crisp fall air. HCES fathers took turns shucking oysters for all to enjoy as families listened to the sounds of the Kelly Brand Band and visited with friends underneath our iconic bell tower. The evening completed the week of celebrations with HCES friends and families old and new.
