A major portion of the HCES PK-3 and PK-4 curriculum is based on the “Letter People”, designed by Abrams and Company Publishers. The students learn to recognize the letters and their sounds through the use of this curriculum. There are 26 letter people, 13 males and 13 females. The 5 vowels are referred to as "Letter Lights." When a letter light is introduced, students know that the letter will make two sounds (long vowel and short vowel). When introducing “Q” and “U” as a pair (as a rule “u” always follows “q”) the teachers creatively “married” the letters in a true wedding to help the students enjoy the learning process.

On the morning of April 26, students and their families gathered at Holy Comforter Episcopal Church as Mr. Q and Ms. U were wed by Father Ted Monica. PK-4 teachers, Emily Wood, Paige Harper and Michele Proctor, served as bridesmaids. During the vows, the couple promised to “love, honor and stand next to each other, even in queasiness… never questioning the other…” After exchanging quartz rings, the two recited the following prayer. “Let this ring be a sign of the vows by which this consonant and this vowel have bound themselves for eternity. May they never quarrel and may they quench each others quest for quality and help them to never quit being faithful to you.”

Ms. U looked stunning in a tulle veil and was given away by her father, Mr. Peter Klekamp, the HCES head of school. Immediately following the ceremony, the students gathered on the playground for a reception. Wedding cake and goldfish were enjoyed by all! The students bid farewell to Mr. and Mrs. Quincy Q as they headed for their honeymoon in Quebec.
