3rd Annual STEM Saturday Welcomes 124 Local Students

Holy Comforter Episcopal School hosted the 3rd Annual STEM Saturday on January 23rd with overwhelming success! The event welcomed 124 students from 26 local schools to an exciting morning of hands-on, interactive science experiences taught by Holy Comforter teachers.
The students, in Kindergarten through 8th grade, and their parents rotated between various classes in the state of the art Knight STEM Building, as they built floating vessels, created working windmills, experimented with electricity and more! (A full description of classes is listed below.) The two-story, 12,385 square foot Knight STEM Building is the only one of its kind for an independent school in the area dedicated solely to STEM-based learning for students in grades K-8, offering the latest innovation in technology and STEM teaching. The STEM curriculum is driven by problem-solving, discovery, exploratory learning, and requires students to actively engage a situation in order to find its solution.

Each session focused on one core science concept that included either technology or engineering. Each session also provided a take away for the student to repeat the activity at home. In addition to the sessions, Coaxis International brought their astronaut space shuttle flight simulator where students could "land" a space shuttle on the runway as they listened to flight instructions through their headset. The Sea Mobile Marine Life Educational Program and Traveling Aquarium from Gulf Specimen Marine Lab brought various sea creatures for the students to observe and hold. Other interactive demonstrations from MoLab, the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory, the Challenger Learning Center, the FSU Center for Developmental Science and FAMU’s Entomology Lab were presented in the school’s student center.

The classes paralleled what our Holy Comforter students are doing each day in the STEM classes.

Thank you to the following sponsors for bringing STEM Saturday to fruition: Presenting Sponsor – Coaxis; Classroom Sponsors - KWB Pathology, Tallahassee Neurological Clinic, The J.L. Davis Group, LLC, Prime Meridian Bank and Envision Credit Union; In-Kind – Tally Connection.
