The Arts are Alive at Holy Comforter

We believe that students can discover a life long appreciation for the arts through participation. Students are enabled to pursue their optimum competence in the visual arts, vocal and instrumental music, and performing arts.

The performing, visual, and musical arts are central to the Holy Comforter experience. We believe that our students become more adept learners, passionate problem-solvers, confident public speakers and, most importantly, culturally aware citizens through their experience with the arts.

Visual Arts

We believe giving students an opportunity for self-expression and discovery of their unique gifts, encourages self confidence and broadens their creative thinking.  With dedicated art studios, opportunities are created for students to develop fine motor skills and creativity through the arts of drawing, painting, sculpting, ceramics and more. Deeply integrated into the curriculum, especially through our project-based learning programs, students learn about art history, and storytelling and tap their creativity to bring their learning to life.

Performing Arts

From movement, song and dance in the preschool to music classes, annual class performances in the elementary school, musical theater and instrumental electives in Middle School and Chapel presentations, our students take center stage all year long, developing confidence in themselves as presenters, creators of music, singers and dancers. Arts for All

Lower School Musicals

For over 40 years, our musicals have been a treasured tradition and an important part of our preschool and elementary curriculum. Each year students perform in a musical for families and friends. Taking center stage develops confidence in themselves as presenters, creators of music, singers and dancers. 
Several musicals are long-standing traditions that students and families look forward to each year.

The Commons Performing Arts Center

The Commons - Performing Arts Center and Cafe, built in 2019, completed the colonnade that surrounds our courtyard. With the addition of the Commons, a full performing arts theatre and dedicated space for the arts, brain-based learning opportunities are available for students from PK3 – 8th grade. Research reinforces that when children receive sequential music instruction, it can impact their proficiency in language, reading, math and cognition.

The Commons features a full stage, acoustical paneling, theatrical lights and state of the art sound equipment, teaching students all components of a fine arts education. 

Middle School Art Electives

Our Middle School arts electives provide our students the opportunity to pursue interests that may not fall under the traditional educational umbrella. Students who would like to dive deeper into arts education have a variety of electives from which to choose. 

  • 2D Art Foundations

    Students explore 2D media and techniques while studying the elements and principles of design inside a 9x12” hand-bound sketchbook. Students achieve a greater understanding of their personal voice as an artist, observational drawing skills, and a studio practice they can take with them.

  • 3D Art Foundations

    Students will explore sculptural media and techniques while studying the elements and principles of 3D design. Various artists, genres, and themes are studied and applied to our art-making practice. Project studies include ceramics, textile manipulation, soft sculpture, and relief sculpture and also have the opportunity to work with Opening Nights elective  as set design artists.  

  • Opening Night! 

    This musical theatre class teaches students the major components of theatre production from script to stage. From the selection of a musical, casting, singing, dancing, directing, marketing, set design, costuming, theatre technology, sound and lighting, students are hand-on in creating the end of years dramatic musical performance for the school and community! 

  • School of Rock | A Modern Band & Rock Ensemble 

    Students learn the fundamentals of music performance in a rock band setting.  From guitar, bass, drums/percussion, keyboard to vocalists, students learn music theory, written notation, scales and chords, music history, and musical style and aesthetics with a repertoire taken from Rock, Pop, Jazz, Americana, Folk/Acoustic, Worship, and other popular musical styles. They showcase their talents in two shows each year. 

  • Introduction to Guitar

    Students learn the basics of playing acoustical guitar in a group setting including technique, musicality, accompaniment, note reading, and basic principles of music theory, and participate in discussions on music history.  Student showcase their talents in two shows each year. 

  • Middle School Band

    Students perform in a concert band setting and perform multiple concerts throughout the school year. The class offers instruments including  flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, and percussion and drums while focusing on music selections from film and movies, suites, jazz charts, and concert music.
